Chapter 23

Phoenix

“What the fuck is taking them so long,” I yelled in frustration to the empty staircase. They have never been this late before. It’s almost six and Apollo is pissed. I wonder if Diana is doing okay after I knocked her out yesterday.

“Tell them to get their asses into the sparring ring in the next fifteen minutes before I drag them down here myself!” Apollo yelled over his shoulder before disappearing to the weapons gym down the hall. Yup, he’s definitely pissed, and someone is getting a beatdown today.

“You better go wake them up,” Onasis said with a worried expression that morphed into something sad looking when her eyes met mine. “You know he’s only doing it to protect us. He vowed never to lose another person to this war.”

I looked into her deep blue eyes laced with sorrow. Her sister Hera was engaged to Apollo when a demon attacked her before Onasis was old enough to join the institution. The wound of her loss never healed, and we were all still mourning her. Onasis and Apollo the most. That’s when we all said we would never date within our command, and then Diana blows in here like a tornado.

“I know, but it was years ago. He has to move on at some point.” My heart clenched with the flash of hurt in her expression.

Reaching over, I pulled her into a hug, rubbing my arm up and down her back in a gentle gesture. “I’m sorry, Onasis. We all loved her, both of you. You’re like our little sister, just like Hera was; I would do anything to go back to that night and save her. We all would go back and exchange our life for hers. We spent countless days analyzing everything about that night, trying to see what went wrong, but in the end, none of us were close enough to stop the attack. All we could do was watch in horror, too slow to stop the demon. We hunted him down though, and got vengeance for your sister. If anything will help you sleep at night, let it be that. We killed the creature that took her from our lives.”

Pulling away with tears rimming her eyes, she fiddled with the hem of her shirt. “I know Phoenix. Thank you. You better see what’s taking them so long. Diana was pretty beat up yesterday, but he won't give her a pass. Not when he wants to take her out into the field in a few days.”

“He wants to do what?” I practically screamed at her as she flinched.

“I really don’t know why he doesn't tell you his plans. He wants to see if she has the incorporeal gift. If he can’t get her to show us here, then he’s planning on taking her out, wondering if it’s terror-induced.” She winced at the last statement.

My blood boiled. Was he out of his fucking mind? There’s no way she’s ready for that.

I turned and strode up the stairs, afraid to say anything that was currently running through my mind for fear it would just piss her off.
